Sensory Friendly Fun at Medina County Fair
The sights, sounds, smells, and excitement of the Medina County Fair are part of what makes it one of the best weeks of the summer. But for some people with developmental disabilities, autism, sensory sensitivities, or other unique needs, all that excitement can quickly become overwhelming.
That’s why the Medina County Fair, Medina County Junior Fair Board and the Medina County Board of Developmental Disabilities (MCBDD) are working together to present Sensory Fun Friday on Friday, August 7, from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm at the Medina County Fairground (720 West Smith Road, Medina, OH). The event centers on creating a more welcoming and comfortable fair experience for children, adults, and families of all abilities.
“Everyone deserves the chance to make wonderful memories at the fair,” said MCBDD Superintendent Stacey Maleckar. “Sensory Fun Friday is about making small adjustments that can have a big impact, ensuring more families can enjoy this incredible community tradition together. We’re incredibly grateful to the Medina County Junior Fair Board for championing this effort and helping ensure our county fair is a place where everyone feels welcome, included, and celebrated.”
The Medina County Senior and Junior Fair Boards have been working hard planning a day packed with sensory-friendly fun. Throughout the event, many rides will feature reduced lights and noise; creating a more comfortable experience while still delivering all the excitement fairgoers love. Participants in the event will be able to enjoy a special presentation from Outback Ray, a demonstration by the Medina County Sheriff’s K-9 unit, adapted games, and activities with Hoopsie Daisy Hula Hoops. Attendees will also be able to take a turn showing an animal with the help of a Junior Fair Board member. And if anyone gets overwhelmed, there will also be a sensory bus on site as a place to get away and recharge. The MCBDD will be on hand to provide information, answer questions, and share resources which may be helpful to individuals with disabilities and their families.
