Technology Creating Independence

  • News

Technology can open doors, remove barriers and make everyday life a little easier. Technology isn’t just about what’s new; it’s about what’s possible. More than 700 people had the opportunity to see that potential in action during the annual Interactive Tech Expo, held September 24 at Summit Mall.

Hosted by the Medina County Board of Developmental Disabilities (MCBDD), in partnership with the Summit County DD Board and We Thrive Together, the free community event brought together more than 45 exhibitors showcasing innovative technology designed to support accessibility, independence and inclusion.

From communication and mobility tools to adaptive devices and everyday technology, the expo gave attendees the chance to discover solutions that can help people with disabilities, limited mobility and other challenges live more independently.

And this wasn’t a “look but don’t touch” event. Attendees could try products firsthand, ask questions and talk directly with assistive technology specialists and companies about how different tools could fit into their everyday lives.

“The response to this year’s expo was incredible,” said Connie Jack, MCBDD Assistive Technology Specialist. “We were excited to connect people with technology that can make a real difference in their daily lives. Sometimes, finding the right tool can mean greater independence, increased confidence and the ability to do something that once seemed difficult or impossible.”

The expo highlighted just how far assistive technology has come, and how many possibilities are available. Exhibits featured tools to help with communication, mobility, vision, daily living, accessibility and more, giving attendees an opportunity to see technology not simply as a convenience, but as a pathway to greater independence.

“Technology has the power to break down barriers and create new possibilities,” Jack said. “Events like this are important because they give people the opportunity to see what’s out there, try it for themselves and discover what might work for them.”

The strong turnout demonstrated the community’s growing interest in technology that supports people of all abilities. MCBDD, the Summit County DD Board and We Thrive Together, are already looking forward to bringing the Interactive Tech Expo back next year.
