Celebrating Direct Support Professionals During DSP Appreciation Month
Every day, Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) help people with developmental disabilities live the lives they choose, and their impact goes far beyond the tasks they perform. September is DSP Appreciation Month, a time to recognize the hundreds of DSPs in Medina County who support people in their homes, at work, in their communities and wherever life takes them. DSPs are there for the everyday moments that make life meaningful. They may help someone learn a new skill, prepare a meal, get ready for work, navigate the community, make a purchase, try something new or simply enjoy a favorite activity. They provide support while encouraging people to make their own choices, build confidence and pursue their goals.
But being a DSP isn’t just about providing assistance. It’s about building relationships. A great DSP gets to know the person, not just their support plan. They learn what makes someone laugh, what they enjoy, what they want to accomplish and what matters most to them. They celebrate the small victories and the big milestones, encourage independence and help create opportunities for people to be active, valued members of their communities.
The goal isn’t to do things for someone. It’s to help them do more for themselves.
DSPs also play an important role in helping communities become more welcoming and inclusive. When people with developmental disabilities are supported to shop, work, volunteer, participate in activities, attend events and connect with others, everyone benefits. DSPs help make those connections possible. Their work can be challenging, rewarding, unpredictable and incredibly meaningful, all at the same time. And often, the most important things they do may never make the news or receive recognition. It’s the encouragement before a first day at a new job. The patience while learning a new skill. The celebration after accomplishing a personal goal. The reassurance when something doesn’t go as planned. Those moments matter.
During DSP Appreciation Month, we celebrate the people who show up every day to support independence, choice, dignity and belonging.
To every Direct Support Professional: Thank you for the difference you make, not just in the lives of the people you support, but in our entire community.
Your work matters. Your relationships matter. And the people you support are better because you’re there.
