Addressing Emergency Safety for People with Disabilities

  • News

The Medina County Board of Developmental Disabilities (MCBDD) is committed to fostering a safer and more inclusive community for people with developmental differences and their families. In order to help reach that goal, the MCBDD is proud to offer free Roth ID Tags and Blue Envelope safety resources to Medina County residents.

“We believe that safety and dignity should be accessible to everyone which is why we are excited to bring these safety resources to our community,” says Stacey Maleckar, Superintendent of the Medina County Board of DD. “They help reduce fear and confusion in high-stress situations, both for the individual and for first responders.”

The Roth ID Tag is a voluntary informational tag designed to be attached directly to car seats, wheelchairs, or any other durable equipment. Tags may be customized to include information such a person’s name, emergency contact information, and additional details that may be critical during a crisis; diagnosis, allergies, communication challenges, hearing and speech limitations. This information can be lifesaving in situations where a person with a disability may be unable to communicate on their own.

The Blue Envelope helps drivers and passengers with developmental, cognitive and communication disabilities navigate traffic stops safely. The envelope is used to hold important documents like a driver’s license, registration, insurance cards, and personalized tips and instructions about interacting with the driver/passenger so officers are able to communicate effectively during a traffic stop.

Both of these resources include a window sticker that is used to alert first responders to look for the Roth ID Tag or Blue Envelope for critical emergency related information. These materials are suitable for both children and adults, and are intended to provide first responders with immediate access to vital information during a situation or crisis.

“These small yet powerful tools make a big difference in helping people with developmental differences. They help improve communication, and promote positive interactions with first responders. They are a step forward in making our community more inclusive and helping people with disabilities be understood and supported at critical times,” states Maleckar.
